Great article in the Austin Business Journal about Jim Breyer establishing an office in Austin. When you pair that up with Apple expanding, Tesla coming to town, and big local offices for Facebook and Google and Atlassian, not to mention homegrown firms like Indeed and Wordpress Engine, and relatively newly public companies like Sailpoint, Upland Software, BigCommerce, and VitalFarms, just to name a few. It’s exciting times for Austin.

In this article, Jim is asked, “why Austin?” and part of his answer refers to Dell:

The Dell alumni network means there are very likely enormous breakthrough opportunities. Similar in fashion to Silicon Valley with Facebook and Google alumni creating next-generation companies. The Dell alumni network seems to be similar in terms of fostering those types of innovation and the impact they will have. They’re not just at the top nationally, they’re world-class.

Of course, it isn’t just Dell alumni, it’s also the Dell Medical School and facilities that are transforming Austin’s role in healthcare and fostering a new generation of entrepreneurial activity.

But when it comes to Austin, I think Jim will quickly find that the impact of the Trilogy Alumni network is pervasive. And the secondary effects of that network are even more interesting.

You can learn more about it from one of the panels we did at SXSW, and more coverage on Silicon Hills, and at one point FounderDating ranked Trilogy’s alumni the #2 most entrepreneurial alumni network in the country.

The last time we polled for this information, approximately 43% were owners, 13% C-level, and another 13% were VP-level. Likely those percentages have been going up, but let’s be honest, it isn’t the only way to measure the impact our alumni have had helping other people build their businesses, or raising amazing families, or leading non-profits that make a big impact.

If you’re looking for secondary effects, you have to look no further than, for example, Capital Factory — where Josh Baer has fostered a great community for startups to form, learn, learn from each other, and flourish.

Exciting times for Austin ahead, I believe.
